ENTREVISTA/INTERVIEW A THE ROAD VIKINGS

1. ¿How were The Road Vikings born?

It was an idea I was kicking around many years ago while I was in other bands and projects. Biker bands at the time only played blues. I wanted to do something more hard rock like, “Born to be Wild,’ (Steppenwolf) crossed with Judas Priest. This is my first and only band that plays what I want. I alone make the (musical) decisions. Lisa handles every other aspect of the band.

2. ¿Why the name “The Road Vikings?”

We are not a band of sissy musicians. We are a power metal band. Myself, I am a Harley riding outlaw biker – I like to hit the road on my chopper. If you’ve ever known an outlaw biker, you will realize quickly that he is, for better or worse, like a pirate or a viking.  I plan to take the band on the road as professional entertainers. Thus the name ‘The Road Vikings.’

3. ¿How would you describe the fans?

Most of our fans are dudes that like to drool over Lisa. Seriously, the other fans are trippin’ over my guitar solos. Then there are the fans that just want to hear the high screams I do. Most of the new fans sign on after they see us play live. Our songs are designed to play live and have the best impact then.

4. ¿What is the most difficult thing now in music to have success in metal?

Metal now has so many sub-categories…there are almost too many choices. Fifteen years ago there were only a few dozen major metal acts out there. When Metallica came on the scene they didn’t have too much competition because there was no Internet and fans basically had to accept whatever the major record labels put out there. Now record companies don’t have big money to throw at an unknown act. It’s really hard to get people to leave the house and go see a live show when they can watch a video on YouTube. To compete with anything online you have to deliver a really amazing show, which The Road Vikings do in spades.

5.¿What is the USA metal scene like right now?

I would say it depends on what part of the country you live in. Unfortunately, in our hometown – San Francisco, CA – the metal scene is on life support. Most people here listen to rap or electronic dance music. But in other parts of the country rock is still a big deal, and kids actually want to learn to play the guitar or drums and be in a band. The good news is that the metal fans that are left are very loyal and will support your music in every way (come to your shows, buy your CDs and tee-shirts, and spread the word about your music. They are the IDEAL fans)

6.¿Do you know any Mexican metal bands or musicians?

To be honest, I had no idea that there were so many metal music lovers in Mexico.  We recently signed on with Sliptrick Records, and on the same label is a band called Black Oil. They are headed up by a really cool cat named Addasi who has introduced us to the Mexican metal scene, particularly Irma Iniguez and Metal Mexico.

7. ¿What funny or bizarre thing has happened to The Road Vikings at a show?

There are always funny things that happen at every Road Vikings show (or on the way to the show). For example, people always want to sit in my throne, and sometimes the ladies pile themselves onto my lap, like Santa Claus. But the craziest thing that happened recently involved our gear on the way to a gig. Our second guitar player Brian is responsible for locking the trailer and making sure it is securely attached to the van. At the last gig (probably after smoking a little too much weed), he didn’t lock the trailer and the door flew open while we were going 70 miles an hour on the freeway. Out flew my guitar pedals, one of the Marshall amps, the spear to the top of the throne and Brian’s threads for the show. Brian had to play in his boxer shorts. Ha! Later on, after the show, I went back to see if I could find any of the gear on the freeway and it was all flattened like a pancake. Imagine your fave Marshall JCM 800 with its guts splattered all over the road.  Brutal.

1-¿Cómo nació The Road Vikings?

Fue una idea, yo ya tenía tiempo intentando, mientras tocaba con otras bandas y proyectos, bandas “biker” y solamente tocábamos blues en ese tiempo. Yo quería hacer algo más hard rock, “Born to be Wild,’ (Steppenwolf) combinado con Judas Priest. Ésta es la primera banda en donde estoy tocando lo que realmente quiero tocar. Yo realizo las decisiones musicales. Lisa maneja los demás aspectos de la banda.

2. ¿Porqué eligieron el nombre The Road Vikings?

No somos una banda de músicos débiles. Somos una banda de power metal. Yo mismo poseo una Harley y soy un motociclista forajido., me gusta salir a pasear con mi chopper. Si tú conoces alguna vez a un motociclista, te darás rápidamente cuenta de que es algo similar a un pirata o un vikingo. Planeo ir con la banda por el camino como profesionales del entretenimiento. Por ello el nombre The Road Vikings.

3. ¿Cómo describen a sus fans?

La mayoría de ellos son hombres que babean por Lisa. Ya en serio los otros fans están viajando con mis solos. Ahí tienes también a los fans que solo quieren escuchar los gritos que yo hago. La mayoría de los nuevos fans se añadieron al escucharnos en vivo y tuvieron así el mejor impacto de la banda.

4.  ¿Qué es lo más complicado hoy en día para tener éxito en el metal?

El metal ahora tiene un montón de sub-categorías… hay demasiadas opciones. Hace 15 años existían solo unos cuantos grandes eventos de metal. Cuando Metallica llegó a la escena ellos no tenían mucha competencia porque no había internet y los fans básicamente tenían que aceptar lo que las grandes disqueras les ofrecieran, Ahora las disqueras no tienen tanto dinero para lanzar grandes actos de metal con cualquier banda. Es realmente difícil lograr que la gente salga de sus casas y asistir a un evento en vivo cuando pueden ver un video en youtube. Para competir con cualquiera en línea tu debes de ofrecer un show increíble, lo que hacemos con The Road Vikings.

5. ¿Cómo se encuentra la escena en Estados Unidos de América ahora?

Yo diría que eso depende de en qué parte del país tú vivas. Desafortunadamente, en nuestro lugar de residencia San Francisco, California, la escena de metal está en cuidados intensivos. La mayoría de la gente aquí escucha rap o música electrónica. Pero en otras partes del país el rock es aún muy popular, y los niños quieren aprender a tocar la guitarra o la batería y estar en una banda. Las buenas noticias son que los fans del metal que quedan son muy leales y apoyarán tú música en cualquier forma (asistiendo a tus eventos, comprando tus CDs y playeras, y comparten la palabra acerca de tu música. Esos son los fans ideales.

6.  ¿Conocen a alguna banda de México?

Para ser honesto, no tenía idea de que hubiera tantos amantes del metal en México. Nosotros recientemente firmamos con Sliptrick Records, y en el mismo sello discográfico hay una banda llamada Black Oil. Ellos están liderados por un compa muy agradable llamada Adassi, que nos platicó sobre la escena de metal mexicano, particularmente sobre Irma Iñiguez y Metal México.

7.  ¿Les ha ocurrido algo muy gracioso o bizarro durante una presentación?

Siempre hay cosas graciosas que ocurren en los eventos de The Road Vikings (en camino al evento o en el mismo). Por ejemplo, la gente siempre se quiere sentar en mi trono, y algunas veces las chicas se apilan en mi regazo, como Santa Claus. Pero lo más loco que ocurrió recientemente tuvo que ver con nuestro equipo en camino a la tocada. Nuestro segundo guitarrista Brian es responsable de cerrar el tráiler y asegurarlo a la camioneta. En la última tocada (probablemente después de fumar mucha hierba) el no cerró y la puerta se abrió mientras nosotros íbamos a más de 110 km por hora en la carretera. Así volaron mis pedales para guitarra, uno de los amplificadores Marshall, la flecha que va encima de mi trono y los trapos de Brian para el evento. Brian tuvo que tocar en bóxer. Jaja, después del evento, yo fui a revisar si podía encontrar algo del equipo en la autopista y estaba todo apachurrado como un pancake. Imagina tu Marshall JCM 800 favorito con las tripas derramadas por todo el camino. Brutal.
